About

Fr. Dan is a Franciscan friar of Holy Name Province (New York) and a systematic theologian who researches and teaches in the areas of constructive theology, spirituality, and the medieval Franciscan philosophical and theological tradition.

 

In addition to several books, he is the author of more than 120 scholarly and popular articles and book chapters in leading international theological and pastoral publications. He is a regular contributor to the publication Give Us This Day and previously served as a columnist at America magazine. Fr. Dan’s current book projects are tentatively titled, Catholicity and Emerging Personhood: A Theological Anthropology (Orbis Books) and Not Because of Sin: Love is the Reason God Became Human (Franciscan Media). He is also editing the correspondence between Thomas Merton and Naomi Burton Stone for publication.

 

Fr. Dan has delivered keynote addresses and invited lectures at universities and in dioceses around the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe. He regularly presents academic papers at the conferences of the American Academy of Religion; the Catholic Theological Society of America; the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality; the College Theology Society, where he is co-convener of the Spirituality section; and the International Thomas Merton Society, where he previously served three consecutive terms on the ITMS Board of Directors.

 

He currently serves on a number of academic boards and committees, including the Board of Trustees of St. Bonaventure University in New York and the Board of Regents of the Franciscan School of Theology in California. Fr. Dan is the recipient of several honors and distinctions, including awards for his writing and an honorary doctorate from Felician University in New Jersey in 2015.
